Zama Zikhali grew up at Enseleni (a township near Richards Bay, in KwaZulu-Natal). She was raised by religious and strict parents (Pastor and Principal).
In 2011, she obtained her B-Tech in Mining Engineering (University of Johannesburg) and Mine Manager’s Certificate of Competency (metalliferous) in 2017. She further obtained Women in Leadership certificate in 2020 from University of Stellenbosch-Executive Development. In 2021, she completed her PGDip in General Management and obtained her MBA with GIBS in 2022.
In her 16 years working in the mining industry, she gained experience in the hard rock mines, inspectorate & coal sector. She has worked in production, the government and HSE department. She believes in the spirit of “ubuntu” (humanity), authenticity, inclusion and that it is ok NOT to know everything (ask for help).
She is a mentor and change catalyst. Aside from her vast work experience, she is a mother to a 14-year-old boy (Ziyanda) and serves as an Apostle. She lives by the motto: “You stop learning, you start dying! You stop watering the plant it dies therefore learn, unlearn, and relearn is critical!”
