Zama Zikhali Safety Superintendent Mafube Coal Mine | Zama Zikhali grew up at Enseleni (a township near Richards Bay, in KwaZulu-Natal). She was raised by religious and strict parents (Pastor and Principal). In 2011, she obtained her B-Tech in Mining Engineering (University of Johannesburg) and Mine Manager’s Certificate of Competency (metalliferous) in 2017. She further obtained Women in Leadership certificate in 2020 from University of Stellenbosch-Executive Development. In 2021, she completed her PGDip in General Management and obtained her MBA with GIBS in 2022. In her 17 years working in the mining industry, she gained experience in the hard rock mines, inspectorate & coal sector. She has worked in production, the government and HSE department. She believes in the spirit of “ubuntu” (humanity), resilience, agility and that it is ok NOT to know everything (ask for help). In her journey in mining, she can attest that safe mines achieve their production targets therefore, we cannot separate safety and production. She is a mentor and change catalyst. Aside from her vast work experience, she is a mother to a 15-year-old boy (Ziyanda) and serves as an Apostle. She lives by the motto: “You stop learning, you start dying! You stop watering the plant it dies therefore learn, unlearn, and relearn is critical!” |

Ndodaxolile Soya Mining Inspector at DMRE | Mr. Ndodaxolile Soya, a seasoned mining professional with over 23 years of experience in the industry. Mr. Soya has a diverse background, having spent 17 years in the private sector and the remaining years in the public sector within the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy. During his time in the private sector, Mr. Soya held various positions ranging from Section Miner to a General Manager, showcasing his versatility and expertise in both underground and open-cast mining. In the public sector, he served as an Inspector, Senior Inspector, and acted as a Principal Inspector in the Mpumalanga region. He is currently back at the DMRE as a Mining Inspector. He holds a National Higher Diploma in Mining Engineering which he obtained from the University of Johannesburg and has a Mine Manager’s Certificate of Competency (Coal). Mr. Soya’s journey in the mining industry commenced in 2000 when he received sponsorship from Anglo Coal, and since then, he has continued to excel in his career. |

Environmental Management
Musa Mokoena HSC Manager | Isisekelo Engineering After 25-years of experience at Arnot Coal Mine, Musa was retrenched in 2020 when the Coal Supply Agreement (CSA) ended between the Mine and Eskom. Seeing that his passion was cut short within SHEQ, Musa started his own company, Royal Bakoena Services (RBS) and got involved in part-time SHEQ Consulting Services. In 2021, his company partnered with Isisekelo Engineering Services (IES) and is currently involved in different Construction Projects where he is responsible for SHEQ Services. His responsibility within IES is not limited to SHEQ but much broader as he is responsible for Community Development. Manager, Sustainability | Exxaro Coal | 2010 – 2020 He started as an underground Labourer and went up the ranks until he reached the position of Manager, Sustainability. While at Arnot, Musa was the Head of the following Departments (HOD): Health/Hygiene, Safety, Environment and Community Development. He gained vast experience of Underground and Opencast Mining, Rehabilitation, Plant and Community Development. He did well together with his team, both at the Mine and outside the Mine. EDUCATION

Matome Makwela Asst. Environmental Advisor |
Minerals Council Mr Matome Makwela is currently the Senior Policy Analyst in the Environment Department at the Minerals Council South Africa. His responsibility amongst others is to conduct policy reviews and analysis on legislation, policies and strategies from government pertaining to water, waste, chemicals and biodiversity management and assesses their potential impact on the mining industry, particularly the members of the Minerals Council. His career started with the national department of Health, responsible water, waste and chemicals and joined Toyota SA Motors responsible for environmental programmes and then Gauteng provincial department of Agriculture, Conservation and Environment responsible for amongst others, review of environmental impact assessment reports, before joining the Minerals Council South Africa. He holds an MSc Degree from the University of Limpopo, a Post Graduate Diploma in Business Management from Wits Business School and an Education, Training and Development (ETD) Diploma from the University of Johannesburg (formerly RAU). |

Herbert Modupi Regional Manager | Minerals Council He specialises in Public Participation, Community Consultation, Community Engagement and Community liaison Services, stakeholder identification and mobilisation. Obtained over 19 years’ experience in training and facilitation of workshops, Conferences and Meetings for different organizations such as the Centre of Community Development, Golder Associates Africa, Zitholele Consulting and International Association of Public Participation (IAP2) AAP. His expertise includes development, implementation and evaluation of communication strategies for large scale projects e.g. Mining, Water Infrastructure, etc and has facilitated over four hundred and fifty workshops and meetings. Holds international experience in several parts of the continent such as Swaziland, Lesotho, Namibia and Ghana and including PNG, Australia etc. Recipient of the IAP2 2014 Core Values Awards in Excellence in Public Participation in Southern Africa: Project of the Winner and later followed by an international award for Core Values for Project of the Year by IAP2 held in Sydney, Australia. He served for three years on the board of advisors for Southern African Institute of Environmental Assessment, on increasing the capacity of NGO’s, Communities and different levels of government to participate better in environmental assessment processes in the SADC region, sponsored by World Bank. Offers public participation, stakeholder engagement and conflict resolution courses and blue sky thinking between companies, communities and other stakeholder formations. Advocate and Pioneer on resolving conflict/deadlock cases through consultation, collaboration and value of shared knowledge for collective wisdom. Recipient of numerous awards for outstanding work in various projects and in recognition for the third best conference paper for IAIA-sa in 2005, Drakensburg, Kwa-Zulu Natal. Winner of the Core Values Award for IAP2 Southern Africa 2014 and IAP2 Global Award in the dame year. Currently responsible for guiding and supporting the Coal Mining companies together with various spheres of government on collaboration initiatives in the Mpumalanga Province. Alex Khumalo Head: Social Performance | Alex Khumalo is the Head: Social Performance at the Minerals Council South Africa and currently serves as an Independent Trustee of the South Deep Education Trust and the South Deep Community Trust (both trusts were established by Goldfields Limited). Prior to the current role, he managed his own consultancy focusing on socio-economic development. Alex has also worked for Anglo American Platinum, the Scaw Metals Group and cement-maker Holcim South Africa (now AfriSam). Within the Minerals Council, Alex is tasked with enhancing the industry’s developmental impact and outcomes in mining communities through sharing leading practices among members. Outside of work, Alex enjoys both local and international travel, photography, gardening and brewing beer. |

Pearl Nkosi Technical Director/Signatory: Blugrey Occupational Hygiene Consultants Pty Ltd | Pearl Nkosi is a founder of and Director at Blugrey Occupational Hygiene consultants Pty Ltd which is a KZN based Approved Inspection Authority: Occupational Hygiene. She holds a B: Tech Degree in She started her career at Anglo American Thermal Coal, in the VOHE department. She worked at a few operations within Anglo American thermal coal. She was instrumental in the establishment and implementation of Opencast OH systems for Anglo Coal. She worked on a number of projects including the management of operator fatigue on mobile equipment. In 2011, Pearl joined Optimum Coal as an Occupational Hygiene Manager where she lead a team of Ventilation and Occupational Hygiene professionals based at the Optimum Coal operations including opencast operations, metallurgical processing plants, siding operations and one underground mine. She later joined Forbes and Mahnattan Coal (now Buffalo Coal Corp.) in 2012 as the SHEQ Manager for the group (two underground mines, one opencast mine, two metallurgical processing plants and one siding operation) where she was instrumental in the development and implementation of a comprehensive SHEQ Management system which included the construction and commissioning of the Nkosi started her own company in November 2016. The consulting agency has done work at a number of companies of various commodities including Kumba Iron Ore, Harmony Gold, Seriti Resources, Eskom, Nama Copper Mines (Copper concentrate Producers), Desert Lion Energy (Lithium Concentrate Production) Debswana Diamond Mines, NPC Intercement Group to name but a few to better comply with the Health and Safety legal requirements in SA through consulting services, audits and training. The company currently employs 6 people which is meaningful progress in terms of attending to the national crisis of job scarcity. Dr Nothando Moyo Deputy Head of Health | Dr Nothando Moyo is an Occupational Health Medical Practitioner with 12yrs of experience in Occupational Health and Occupational health Policy formulation. She is currently the Deputy Head for Occupational Health at the Minerals Council. Dr Nothando has been the Chairperson for the Northern Cape Mine Managers Association (NCMMA) Wellness Stream and is a past president of the Mine Medical Practitioners Association (MMPA). She has previously worked for Anglo-American as a Superintendent for Health and Wellness. She has a Master of Business Administration from Wits Business School, a Post-graduate Diploma in Occupational Medicine from the University of Pretoria, Medicine and Surgery (MBChB) degree from Medunsa. Dr Nothando is passionate about all things – health and wellness. She is an avid lady golfer and is proud of lowering her handicap index from 36 in 2022 to 16 in 2024. |
